Today I am sharing a fun project – how to make your own waffle cone tray!
I know, I know. How necessary is a waffle cone tray? Not that necessary, but definitely helpful and super fun!
Since you can’t set a waffle cone down, it makes it a little difficult to prepare several at a time.
Once I got it in my head that I wanted to make a tray, I was on the hunt. I wanted one that was affordable, easy to clean, and easy to store.
Like so many of my projects, IKEA came to the rescue! I bought the KLIPSK bed tray which was perfect for my needs. It is inexpensive (~$10), it folds up compactly, and it is made of easy-to-clean plastic.
Now on to the tutorial:
Mark the tray where you will be drilling your holes. I used a dry erase marker so that I could easily erase when I made a mistake (which I did a lot!) It was a little tricky getting the grid even. I recommend placing the center row first and then doing the two rows on either side.
Next, you will need to drill a pilot hole at the center of each grid mark.
I didn’t originally have the tool that I needed for this next step, so I purchased a set of hole saws at Lowe’s. I chose this set because it had the size I wanted and was a better deal as a set than just buying one.
These hole saws attach onto your standard drill, so they are very easy to use. I used the 2″ hole saw. Make sure that you drill on top of some scrap wood, and you need to hold the tray very firmly while you are drilling the holes.
At this hole, I was not careful and I allowed the hole saw to jump out a little and I got a messy looking hole.
You will have a big mess after you have finished drilling all of the holes. After brushing all of the shaved bits off, I used a sander to gently sand off some of the extra bits that were still sticking.
To clean it up even better, go over any rough spots with an X-Acto knife to cut off any unsightly pieces.
My favorite waffle cone recipe is from Our Best Bites. See the recipe HERE.
I mean, how great to pop the still-warm waffle cones in the tray to finish cooling while I prepare the rest. Then I can dish up the ice cream and serve everyone at once! And the best part? I fold the legs up and store it with my other trays!
