As I was walking around Costco this past week, I came across these individual flans in the refrigerated section.
It is a package of 8 individual caramel flans.
Flan is fine, but what really caught my eye was the adorable glass jars they came in!
They are about the size of a yogurt cup, and each flan has a foil lid (just like a yogurt cup).
Unlike a yogurt cup, these are glass!
At about $1/each, I had to buy them just for the glass cups – the flan was just a bonus!
I’m not sure how long these will be for sale at Costco, but I always keep my eye out for great jars that can be used after the product is gone!
If they came with real lids they’d be perfect for making individual yogurts. I make mine in quart jars, but individual ones are adorable.
They would be perfect for individual yogurts! (aside from no lids!)
Do you know the nutritional info on these wonderful flans? I’m hoping there’s lots of protein, so I don’t feel so guilty when I scarf one down for breakfast!
Thank you
I don’t actually. Since I have long thrown away the packaging, I can’t check. If I recall correctly, the ingredients were pretty simple – like cream, sugar, and eggs.
Did you ever do something with them? I kept mine too for the same reason but not sure what to turn them into. Thinking something with votive candles…
Actually, I have been using them for pancake syrup. When I am feeling fancy, I make homemade buttermilk pancake syrup and then I give every member of my family a little one of these jars with the syrup in it. I also love to drink yerba mate, and I use one as part of my DIY travel kit. So, yes I use them, but they are definitely not in a daily rotation!
Candles does sound like a great idea! I feel like there is probably a clever idea for a lid for these cute little jars, and that would potentially open up a lot more options (such as homemade yogurt, etc.)
I got this before and it tastes sooo good
I got those jars and I use them when I do passion fruit or soursop mousse, they have the perfet size for that dessert 😉
That is a great idea!! These jars just make a little dessert more special!
I bought the pack just for the jars as well! but would you recommend using those jars to make flan at home? like do you know happen to know if they are durable enough to sustain the heat when being steamed or when pouring in hot caramel syrup?
That is a great question, but unfortunately I don’t have the answer!. I have used them in the microwave and put in the dishwasher (with high heat) with no problems, but I have not actually put them in a steamer. When it comes to pouring hot caramel syrup, that is another level of heat. My recommendation would be to have your jars prepared, but then also have a standard pie dish ready as well for your flan. I would pour the caramel into one of the jars, if the glass doesn’t crack, continue pouring into the glasses. If not, switch over to the pie dish. I anticipate the glass will hold up since I imagine they are subject to high heat when they are preparing the original flans at the factory. If you try it out, let me know how it goes!!
